People and Lifestyle

Catering to active and outdoor lifestyles, this friendly community offers a relaxed vibe and a serene escape from the frenzy of everyday life. Residents can be found taking their pups for a leisurely walk, chatting with neighbors while raking leaves, or just lounging on the porch with a cool glass of iced tea. The proximity to Houston’s trendiest hot spots makes this an ideal location, but the vibrant restaurant scene gives you every reason to stay close to home.

Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping

The Heights is a place where you can truly become a regular at your favorite haunts. The owners will treat you like family, so go ahead and saunter into that diner like you own the place. Get cozy at Coltivare, an inviting eatery specializing in wood-fired pizzas, black pepper pasta, and focaccia with burrata. The rustic setting, vegetable garden seating, and delicious flavors take garden-to-table dining to the next level.

Is there any better Southern combination than chicken and waffles? Lola Diner serves up the popular dish as well as a variety of healthy options, pasta, and even their special Day After Thanksgiving sandwich. This modern diner is a local favorite and a go-to brunch spot.

If tacos are your thing, you might just become a Sunday morning regular at Chilosos Taco House. This buzzy Tex-Mex joint features breakfast tacos, lunch specials, and house-made tortillas. Munch on some chips with guac or queso while you wait — this place prides itself on not being a fast food joint. Every single tortilla is freshly made and absolutely worth the wait.

American bistro and bar Alice Blue offers seasonal cuisine in a modern, cozy cafe. Serving classic cocktails and bistro staples with a twist, this intimate local favorite offers daily happy hour, weekend brunch, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Sit inside and or out on the patio, but definitely order the Oysters Rockefeller.

Things to Do

This affable neighborhood is home to community-driven parties and events, and White Linen Night in the Heights is one of the most popular. Inspired by a New Orleans French Quarter event, White Linen Night brings Houstonians out in droves for a lively street fair in the historic part of town. Held at the peak of the Houston summer, the event is designed to promote local businesses. Residents enjoy food and art from local vendors, people watch, window shop, listen to live music, and even take in fashion shows. And yes, you do need to dress in your best white linen, so head to one of the nearby boutiques and outfit yourself to the nines. It’s the neighborly thing to do.

The holiday season in the Heights is something to behold, and nothing exemplifies this more than Lights in the Heights. What began as a few neighbors joining together to decorate their street for the holidays soon grew into a major city event that draws in thousands of visitors annually. The spirit of those early days, when residents of that one block would mingle late into the night, enjoying the magic of what their teamwork created, remains today. Residents from all over Houston travel to see the elaborate Christmas decorations, especially the dozens of historic homes included in the line-up. Sip hot chocolate, wander through the winter wonderland, and take in the magic of the holiday season.

Another truly special way to celebrate the season is with the Holiday Home Tour. This open house-style tour is self-guided, and visitors can either stroll down from the house or catch a ride on the community shuttle.

Residents of the Heights have a standing date, one Saturday a month, for the First Saturday Arts Market. This outdoor arts event features work from visual artists and showcases paintings, sculpture, photography, jewelry, and handmade, artisan products as well as live music and delicious culinary treats from the area’s best gourmet food trucks.

Schools

The Heights is home to the highly-rated Harvard Elementary School, which serves preschool through grade 5.
